The retired policeman has been keeping bees for 30 years; at present his apiary comprises 80 bee families. He has recently been elected leader of the Komló Apiarists’ Association, and has twice won the Mecsek Golden Hive prize. He competes every year and has received gold, silver and bronze awards for his honey.

This 40-year-old, third-generation forester has been keeping bees since 2009, at present with 90 families. Having studied apiary at Szeged’s Forestry College, he had some previous knowledge honey production. He is developing a visitor centre alongside his home, where most of the work is already being carried out. One of the main aims is to preserve authenticity. The concern’s main target group centring around Villány, it would like to combine beekeeping with wine tourism.

The 42-year-old lawyer has been working with bees for 17 years, and at present has 80 families. Apitherapy plays an outstanding role in his activities, as Péter largely became a beekeeper for curative and research reasons. Once a coal miner, the fifty-nine-year old has kept 80 bee families for some 27 years. It is he that is responsible for bee health in the region. He has given many school talks, which he has enjoyed at least as much as his audience. He farms alongside his beekeeping, fattening pigs and tilling the land, and so his family farm takes up all of his time. The insulated 7x4 metre wooden building by his home is planned to be converted into a visitor centre and museum.

The 63-year-old retired bauxite miner has been working with bees for nearly thirty years. At present he has 100 families. When he became redundant he invested his compensation money into an apiary. 20 years ago he was secretary of the Pécs Beekeepers’ Association. He has been a honey judge in Croatia and enjoys good relations with the academic staff of Osijek and Maribor universities. He participates in education and vocational training.

This 33-year-old dental technician was awarded initial support for young farmers. He has kept bees for seven years, his initial 3 families expanding to 85. Alongside his beekeeping, he organises demonstrations in local kitchen garden produce and traditionally-baked food. He can comfortably accommodate up to 26 persons in his converted Honey Shed, where modern technology can be found hand in hand with an authentic environment. His visitors centre is equipped with amplification and internet access.

He began keeping bees at the age of 18 on his own initiative, when he was given two hives from a neighbouring apiarist whom he had assisted in his work. Graduating from Pécs University’s Faculty of Sciences, he retained his love of beekeeping. Her considered it a great honour when the executive of the National Association of Hungarian Apiarists named him the county’s apiarian adviser. At present he keeps 100 bee families in a container in Tolna.

Considering that his original profession was that of electrical operating engineer and technician, he has kept bees for close on 50 years. At present he works with 100 families. He has created the region’s most important apiary visitors centre and has an apiarist’s shop in Pécs. He produces all kinds of honey produce, selling them in his own shop. His main products are wild garlic, rape, linden, sunflower and mixed honeys; beeswax; royal jelly; propolis, and pollen.

Supported by her husband, who has kept bees for a longer period, in 2014 Tamara began producing her own honey. Today the family business has some 100 bee families, all in Hungarian-made polystyrene hives. This is Croatia’s largest apiary of this type. The family business is expanding, their aim being to create their own filling plant satisfying European regulations. They produce mixed honey, wild cherry honey, acacia honey and linden honey.

Since retiring he has for some years been engaged in producing honey-based products, as well as selective breeding of the mother bee. Trained as a painter and decorator, Mr Švraka has kept bees since 1990. Today, with 2,700 families, he is the country’s largest honey producer, with an annual yield of between 80-100 tons, depending on the year. He inherited his love of bees from his father, who taught him how to look after them from an early age. His honey products are exported to Austria, Germany, Holland, Slovenia and other European countries, as well as to Canada and the USA. What remains is sold on the domestic market.
